מחקר

במשך חמש עשרה השנים האחרונות עסקתי באופן אינטנסיבי בחקר הנושאים הבאים: קבלתו והפנמתו של הרעיון המדעי על ידי החברה היהודית בימי הביניים; גישת היהודים כלפי המדעים בימי הביניים, תוך שימת דגש מיוחד על תולדות האסטרולוגיה היהודית בימי הביניים; עבודתו המדעית של הראב"ע, בדגש מיוחד על אסטרולוגיה ואסטרונומיה; שילוב תכנים מדעיים בעבודתו הפרשנית של אברהם אבן עזרא. מגמתי הייתה לעסוק הן בעבודתו הפרשנית והן בעבודתו המדעית, ובאופן זה לשבור את הדיכוטומיה שברגיל עושים בין אבן עזרא הפרשן, מחד גיסא, ובין אבן עזרא המדען, מאידך גיסא. פרסמתי באופן נרחב בנושאים אלה. ספרי הראשון עסק בשילוב רעיונות מדעיים בעבודתו הפרשנית של הראב"ע (אסטרולוגיה ופרשנות המקרא בהגותו של אברהם אבן עזרא, הוצאת אוניברסיטת בר-אילן, תש"ס), וספרי השני עסק בהיבטים השונים של עבודתו המדעית של הראב"ע (Abraham Ibn Ezra and the Rise of Medieval Hebrew Science, Brill Academic Publishers, 2003). שני ספרים אלה התקבלו בעניין רב ע"י המחקר המודרני והם מצוטטים לעתים קרובות במחקרים העוסקים בתולדות עם ישראל ובמדע יהודי בימי הביניים. מאז שנת 2004 אני עוסק בקורפוס האסטרולוגי של אברהם אבן עזרא. מטרת מחקר זה היא להוציא לאור מהדורה מדעית (מבוססת על כתבי היד ששרדו), מתורגמת לאנגלית ומבוארת של כל החיבורים האסטרולוגיים של אברהם אבן עזרא. במסגרת זו, פרסמתי בשנת 2007 מהדורה מדעית, מתורגמת ומבוארת של שתי הגרסאות של "ספר הטעמים" מאת אברהם אבן עזרא (Abraham Ibn Ezra: The Book of Reasons, A Parallel Hebrew-English Critical Edition of the Two Versions of the Text, Edited, translated, and annotated by Shlomo Sela, Brill Academic Publishers, 2007). עבודת המחקר שלי על הקורפוס האסטרולוגי של אברהם אבן עזרא קיבלה הכרה משמעותית, הן בארץ והן בחוץ לארץ. מאז שנת 2006 התמניתי למערכת של שני כתבי עת מדעיים חשובים (Sefarad, Aleph), בשנת 2008 הוענק לי מענק מחקר מטעם "הקרן הלאומית למדע" לשלוש שנים, ובשנת 2009 הוענק לי מענק דומה מטעם "המיניסטריון למדע של הממשלה הספרדית". בסיוע מענקים אלה, שהעניקו דחיפה לא מבוטלת למחקרי, הוצאתי לאור בשנת 2010 מהדורה מדעית, מתורגמת ומבוארת של שתי הגרסאות של "ספר העולם" מאת אברהם אבן עזרא (Abraham Ibn Ezra: The Book of the World, A Parallel Hebrew-English Critical Edition of the Two Versions of the Text, Edited, translated, and annotated by Shlomo Sela, Brill Academic Publishers, 2010). במהלך מחקר זה, חשפתי ארבעה חיבורים מאת אברהם אבן עזרא שלא היו מוכרים עד כה. שלושת המאמרים האחרונים שלי עוסקים בתגליות אלו (ראו רשימת פרסומים). לפיכך אנו יודעים על ששה עשר חיבורים אסטרולוגיים מאת הראב"ע בימים אלה. בעקבות גילויים אלה פרסמתי שני ספרים נוספים בהוצאת Brill Academic Publishers: (Abraham Ibn Ezra on Elections, Interrogations and Medical Astrology, A Parallel Hebrew English Critical Edition of the Book of Elections (3 Versions), the Book of Interrogations (3 versions) and the Book of the Luminaries, Edited, Translated and Annotated, by Shlomo Sela, Leiden-Boston, 2011; Abraham Ibn Ezra on Nativities and Continuous Horoscopy, A Parallel Hebrew English Critical Edition of the Book of Nativities and the Book of Revolution, Edited, Translated and Annotated, by Shlomo Sela, Leiden-Boston, forthcoming 2013.). אני עסוק כעת בתוכנית מחקר ענפה ועמוסה, אשר במרכזה בדיקתם של כתבי יד עבריים ולטיניים, שמהם אני מתכוון בשנים הקרובות להוציא מהדורה מדעית, מתורגמת ומבוארת של ההקדמות לאסטרולוגיה אל אבן עזרא וכן של החיבורים האסטרולוגיים של אבן עזרא שגרסתם העברית המקורית אבדה אבל שרדו בתרגום לטיני. בשנתיים האחרונות, בעקבות מחקר מקיף של כתבי היד העבריים שערכתי בשנה שעברה בספריה הלאומית של צרפת בפריס (BIBLIOTHÈQUE NATIONALE DE FRANCE) ושאני מתכוון להמשיך בשנה הבאה, אני מרחיב את היריעה ועוסק גם בהיבטים הקשורים למדע ולאסטרולוגיה בעבודתם של הרמב"ם, אברהם בר חייא וגם הרלב"ג. במסגרת זו פרסמתי שני מאמרים עם גילויים משמעותיים. אחד מהם חושף תפיסה קוסמולוגית בלתי ידועה עד כה שהייתה רווחת אצל יהודי ספרד במאה הי"ב, והשני חושף חיבור אסטרולוגי בלתי ידוע של אברהם בר חייא שהיה מוסתר בתוך הלוחות האסטרונומיים שלו.
